The average
life time risk of stone formation has been reported in the range of 5 -10 %. The conventional dosage forms have a
number of side effects and their prolonged use leads to toxicity. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the
Alcoholic Bryophyllum pinnatum (ABP) for its effects on ethylene glycol induced urolithiasis in rats. In this study
the ethanolic extracts of Bryophyllum pinnatum was used to study urolithiatic activity. Urolithiatic activity was
assessed using ethylene glycol induced urolithiatic model. The data of urinary, renal and serum parameters were
expressed as mean ± SEM. The results were analyzed statistically using ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s t -test. The
minimum level of significance was fixed at p<0.05. The results shows that ABP (Alcoholic Bryophyllum pinnatum)
shows antiurolithiatic activity at significant level (p<0.05). The increase in urinary calcium, oxalate and phosphate
were normalized by Alcoholic Bryophyllum pinnatum and also increase in serum creatinine and uric acid as a result
of ethylene glycol treatment was normalized by Alcoholic Bryophyllum pinnatum. Thus we can conclude that
Alcoholic Bryophyllum pinnatum showed promising antiurolithiatic activity.
<Email>sarangjain123@rediffmail.com</Email><articletype>Research</articletype><volume>3</volume><issue>2</issue><year>2013</year><keyword>Ethylene glycol,Antiurolithiatic activity,Bryophyllum pinnatum</keyword><AUTHORS>Sarang Jain,Ameeta Argal</AUTHORS><afflication>Research Scholar, Institute of Pharmaceutical Science & Research Center, Bhagwant University, Ajmer, Rajasthan, India-305004,Principal, Rajeev Gandhi College of Pharmacy, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India-462042</afflication></Article></Articles>
